August event lists age quickly. A festival may still appear on an annual calendar even when its best program has finished, tickets have closed, or there is no longer enough time to plan the trip.
This guide was checked on August 5, 2026 and includes only events with a useful date still ahead. Some are easy additions to a Taipei itinerary. Others — especially Penghu and Taitung — deserve their own overnight plan.
Choose the event that fits your route instead of trying to collect them all. A free festival can still become expensive if it requires a flight, a long train ride, or a last-minute hotel.
Dates, admission, transport, and outdoor programs can change. Open the linked organizer page again before you leave.

1. Taipei Summer Festival: save August 15 for the finale
- Official English name: 2026 Taipei Summer Festival
- Chinese name: 2026大稻埕夏日節
- Date: July 25–August 15, 2026; closing show on August 15 at 8:00 p.m.
- Place: Dadaocheng Wharf and Yanping Riverside Park, Taipei
- Cost: Free

The remaining headline is the August 15 closing night: a 20-minute fireworks-and-drone program at the Dadaocheng riverfront. The themed installations and old-street area also make this more than a arrive-shoot-leave stop. Come earlier, walk around Dihua Street, eat before the largest crowds arrive, and then move toward the river.
For public transport, the organizer lists routes from Beimen, Daqiaotou, and Shuanglian MRT stations. Beimen is a useful reference for first-time visitors, but the best station may change with crowd controls. Expect a long walk after the show and do not build a tight late-night connection around it.

2. Taipei Water Festival: the easiest family option in the city

- Date: July 4–August 30, 2026
- Place: Taipei Water Park and Water Adventure Park, Gongguan
- Cost: Taipei Water Park is NT$80 regular / NT$40 concession during summer. Water Adventure Park separately lists adult admission at NT$160 on weekdays and NT$180 on weekends and holidays.
- Tickets or reservation: Normal admission is purchased on site; the two areas have separate tickets
- Best for: Families with children and groups of friends who want an easy half-day in Taipei
This is the least complicated event to add to a Taipei itinerary: it is close to the MRT, it continues until the end of August, and you do not need to build an intercity trip around it.
The important detail is that Taipei Water Park and Water Adventure Park are separate admission areas. Their tickets are not interchangeable. Decide which facilities you actually want before lining up, and bring proper swimwear. Concession rules may require valid proof, so do not assume a foreign student card will automatically receive the same rate.
Taipei Water Park is about a five-minute walk from Gongguan MRT Exit 4. The Water Adventure Park entrance is closer to Exit 1.

3. Yilan International Children’s Folklore & Folkgames Festival: go before August 16

- Date: July 4–August 16, 2026
- Place: Dongshan River Water Park, Wujie Township, Yilan County
- Cost: Standard walk-up admission is NT$250 on weekdays and NT$350 on weekends and holidays; child and other ticket categories have separate rules
- Tickets or reservation: Buy on site, or follow the Klook link from the organizer’s ticket page
- Best for: Families, travelers who enjoy folk performances, and groups that want water activities and culture in one day
Yilan’s festival combines water play, exhibitions, parades, and performances by groups from Taiwan and abroad. The organizer also provides an English website, which makes the daily program easier to check before traveling.
From Luodong TRA Station, walk to the rear-station transfer area and take Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Green 21 to Dongshan River Water Park. The organizer also lists local bus 621 and Kuo-Kuang route 1797. Because the festival ends on August 16, this is a plan-now day trip, not one to save for the end of the month.
Bring swimwear if you plan to use the water areas. Check the performance schedule on your chosen date rather than assuming every troupe appears every day.

4. Taiwan International Balloon Festival: free to watch, paid to ride

- Date: July 4–August 20, 2026
- Place: Luye Highland, Taitung County
- Cost: General viewing is free. Optional tethered rides are NT$500 on site Monday–Thursday and NT$600 on site Friday–Sunday / holidays; online rates are NT$550 and NT$650.
- Tickets or reservation: No ticket for general viewing; tethered rides use the official experience link or limited on-site sales
- Best for: Couples, friends, families, photographers, and travelers already planning eastern Taiwan
Seeing the balloons from the ground and taking a tethered ride are two different plans. The festival grounds are free to visit, while a ride has a separate ticket, height and safety rules, and no guarantee of operation. Wind and visibility decide whether balloons can fly.
Official shuttles connect Taitung Transfer Station, Taitung Railway Station, and Luye Railway Station with Luye Highland. Do not treat Luye as a quick side trip from Taipei. Give Taitung at least one night, and preferably enough time to absorb a weather cancellation.

5. Penghu International Fireworks Festival: choose one remaining Tuesday

- Remaining dates: August 11, 18, and 25, 2026
- Place: Guanyinting Recreation Area, Magong City, Penghu
- Cost: Free public viewing; transport and accommodation are separate
- Tickets or reservation: No event ticket for general viewing
- Best for: Couples and friends who can give Penghu a two- or three-night trip
The fireworks are free, but Penghu is not a free or effortless add-on. Your real booking decision is the flight or ferry and a place to stay around one of the three remaining Tuesday shows.
After arriving in Penghu, continue to central Magong by public bus or taxi. Guanyinting is near the city center, but the county may introduce event-night traffic controls. Check the latest route notice instead of relying on a map screenshot from an earlier show.
If transport prices have already climbed too high, skip the pressure. Penghu deserves time for the islands, not only a rushed arrival for one display.

6. Keelung Mid-Summer Ghost Festival: Taiwan culture, not a theme show

- Date: August 12–September 11, 2026; major public events run August 25–27
- Place: Central Keelung, the Main Altar, Laodagong Temple, and Wanghaixiang / Badouzi
- Cost: Free
- Tickets or reservation: Not required for public areas
- Best for: Travelers interested in Taiwanese history, religion, community traditions, and night photography
This is the strongest cultural event in the guide — and it needs the most respectful framing. The festival is a living religious and community tradition, not a Halloween attraction.
The 2026 organizer schedule lists an August 25 procession, the August 26 water-lantern parade and late-night release, and the August 27 Universal Salvation ceremony. Keelung TRA Station is the practical starting point for city-center events. The lantern release is farther east at Wanghaixiang / Badouzi, so confirm the official route and use local bus or taxi rather than assuming everything happens beside the station.
Observe barriers, keep voices low during rituals, and ask before photographing people at close range. If you do not understand what is happening, watching quietly is better than turning the ceremony into a photo prop.

7. East Coast Land Arts Festival & Moonlit Sea Concert: build a Taitung weekend around it

- Remaining concert dates: August 29–30 and September 28–29, 2026
- Place: Torik Visitor Center, Chenggong Township, Taitung County
- Cost: August 29 is NT$1,500 full price; August 30 is free admission. September 28–29 are listed as free admission.
- Tickets or reservation: August 29 uses the ibon link on the organizer page; the official paid shuttle is booked separately
- Best for: Couples, friends, music and art travelers, and people who prefer a slower east-coast itinerary
This is the event to choose when the journey is part of the experience. The venue sits on the Taitung coast, away from the railway line, and the program connects performance, art, Indigenous and local culture, and the landscape.
August 29 is the ticketed “The Surging Ocean” program. August 30, “The Ocean is Multicolored,” is free. Official paid shuttles are offered from Taitung Transfer Station, Taitung Railway Station, and Yuli, but seats are limited and separate from the concert ticket.
Plan an overnight stay. A same-day Taipei round trip would turn a thoughtful coastal event into a transport race.

Suggested itinerary combinations
A Taipei-based long weekend
- Use Taipei Water Festival as a flexible daytime stop.
- Add the Taipei Summer Festival finale on August 15 if your dates match.
- Take a separate Keelung day or evening for the Ghost Festival; do not force the late-night lantern release into a day already packed with Taipei activities.
A Taipei plus Yilan trip before August 16
- Stay in Taipei and make one early day trip to Dongshan River Water Park.
- Keep the next morning light. Water activities, summer heat, and the return journey can make the day longer than it looks on a map.
A Taitung trip
- Choose the Balloon Festival before August 20 or the Moonlit Sea Concert weekend on August 29–30.
- Add buffer time for weather and transport. The east coast rewards slower planning.
A Penghu trip around one Tuesday
- Build two or three nights around August 11, 18, or 25.
- Book the island connection and room first; the free fireworks do not solve limited transport or accommodation.
Practical tips for Filipino travelers
- Book Taiwan Railways, High Speed Rail, domestic flights, ferries, and rural shuttles separately when required. An event ticket rarely includes the journey.
- An EasyCard is useful for many local buses and metro trips, but it is not a universal event, intercity train, concert, flight, or ferry ticket.
- Keep the organizer page on your phone. A current page is more reliable than a screenshot copied from an older social post.
- Carry a small amount of cash even if you usually pay by card. On-site booths and smaller transport services may not all use the same payment system.
- For ticket concessions, bring the exact document named by the organizer. Do not assume every Philippine student, senior, or disability document maps automatically to a Taiwan discount category.
- Penghu and Taitung are destination trips. Taipei and Keelung are easier for first-time visitors with limited days.
- At the Keelung Ghost Festival, treat rituals and participants with the same respect you would expect at a religious event in the Philippines.
August weather: heat, rain, and typhoons
Taiwan in August is hot, humid, and exposed to sudden heavy rain. Outdoor programs may pause for lightning, strong wind, or typhoon conditions even when the general festival dates have not changed.
Carry water, sun protection, a breathable rain layer, and a dry bag for electronics. Do not rely on a small umbrella in a dense fireworks crowd or strong wind. For balloon, ferry, fireworks, and coastal events, the same-day organizer notice matters more than a forecast saved several days earlier.
