Do you actually need an EasyCard?

PRACTICAL GUIDANCE: You do not need an EasyCard for one Taipei Metro ride. A single-journey ticket works. EasyCard becomes useful when your trip includes repeated MRT rides, Greater Taipei buses, Airport MRT, eligible Taiwan Railway trips or purchases at participating convenience stores and other marked retailers.

Should you buy it immediately after arriving? Buy it at the airport only if you plan to use Airport MRT or another supported service right away. If your first ride is a taxi, you can wait and buy one at a Taipei Metro station or convenience store near your accommodation.

Where to buy and top up an EasyCard

OFFICIAL FACT: EasyCard Corporation lists Taipei Metro and Taoyuan Metro stations, its service center and major convenience-store chains as authorized sales and top-up locations. It also lists Kuo-Kuang service points at Taoyuan Airport terminals 1 and 2 among its sales locations.

At Taipei Metro: ask at the station information counter. Taipei Metro currently documents cash plus several supported cards and mobile payments for buying stored-value cards at station counters.
At a convenience store: look for the EasyCard mark and ask for an adult EasyCard. EasyCard Corporation lists 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, Hi-Life and OK Mart among the authorized chains.
For top-ups: cash is the reliable tourist method documented by EasyCard Corporation at metro stations and participating convenience stores. Do not assume the payment methods accepted for buying the card are also available for adding value.

Card cost, deposit and balance are different: As verified on August 13, 2026, EasyCard Corporation’s adult-card page lists the standard adult card at NT$100, with no deposit and no stored value included. Designs, prices and availability can vary, so confirm the card price before paying. Because the card price is not a deposit, it is not the same as the remaining balance you may later refund.

How much should you load first?

There is no official one-size-fits-all amount. Use this decision instead:

Use Taipei Metro’s live fare tool for the MRT trips you already know.
Add the buses you expect to take.
Add only the retail spending you genuinely want on the card.
Load a modest buffer, not your entire travel budget.
Top up again when the reader shows a lower balance than your next planned trip needs.

A traveler staying near a central MRT station for a weekend may need much less stored value than someone staying longer, using buses and paying at convenience stores. These are planning differences, not official loading requirements.

How to use Taipei MRT: first-trip walkthrough

1. Before entering

Find your current station and destination station.
Note the line color, line name and station codes.
Check whether a transfer is required.
For each train, identify the direction by the terminal station shown on the platform signs.

2. Entering the station

OFFICIAL FACT: Place one EasyCard on the stored-value-card sensor at the gate. When the gate confirms the tap and opens, pass through. Keep the same card with the same traveler for the full journey.

3. Choose the correct direction

The biggest beginner mistake is choosing the correct line but the wrong direction. Do not choose a platform only because its sign uses the right color.

Find your destination on the route map.
Look along that line past your destination.
Identify the terminal station at that end of the line.
Follow signs that say toward that terminal.
On the platform, check that the next-station sequence moves toward your destination.

PRACTICAL GUIDANCE: If you are unsure, show the station name or code to the information counter. English station names and numbered codes are more reliable than trying to pronounce an unfamiliar Chinese name.

4. Transfer, then choose the right exit

Most Taipei Metro transfers happen inside the paid area: leave the train, follow the signs for the next line and direction, and do not tap out until your destination. A few transfers involving the New Taipei Metro Circular Line use an official out-of-station transfer process, so follow station signs instead of assuming every interchange is identical.

At your destination, check the exit number before tapping out. Google Maps may suggest a specific exit because it is closer to your street or attraction. Large stations can involve long underground walks.

Taipei Main Station example: Taipei Metro, Taiwan Railways, HSR, Airport MRT and bus facilities form a large connected area. “Meet at Taipei Main Station” is not a complete instruction. Save the rail system, line, station code and exit or landmark.

Airport MRT is not Taipei MRT

OFFICIAL FACT: Taoyuan Airport MRT is a different rail system operated by Taoyuan Metro. It connects Taoyuan Airport with A1 Taipei Main Station and other stops. Taipei Metro handles most city travel. Both systems currently accept EasyCard, but each operator controls its own fares, timetable and service rules.

Can I use EasyCard here?

What if the balance is low?

Check the balance shown by the reader. If the gate or validator rejects the card, use an add-value machine, convenience store or station information counter before trying again. Some operators publish limited one-time negative-balance rules, but they differ by system; do not build your trip around overdrawing the card.

What if you lose it?

OFFICIAL FACT: EasyCard Corporation says an unregistered card’s balance is treated as lost if the card disappears; loss reporting and stop-payment protection are not available. Registered cards have separate loss-report rules and fees. A typical visitor using an unregistered cash-top-up card should treat it like cash and avoid storing more than needed.

What should you do before leaving Taiwan?

Keep the card for a future Taiwan trip if that is useful to you.
Use a small remaining balance at a participating retailer instead of loading more money.
If you want a refund, ask a Taipei Metro information counter or EasyCard service point for the current procedure. Refund processing blocks the card, and current rules may deduct a handling fee.
Remember: the physical card price is not a refundable deposit.

Common first-time mistakes
